Insider Insurance Secrets to Success You Need to Know Right Now

When the day’s heat begins to swelter before noon and the sounds outside your window at night are snap, crackle and pop, you know it's summertime in the USA. And the official start of summer means America’s celebration of independence is getting close. It seems the party starts earlier every year, with fireworks filling the skies up to weeks before the big day. Everywhere you look, stars and stripes are being hung and communities are planning events to commemorate the occasion. Pie-baking contests, rodeos, carnivals and BBQ cook-offs top the list of things to do any given weekend, with the local pool being the main daytime attraction for kids.

And it's no wonder people are coming together, since freedom is something really worth celebrating. Although the Fourth of July marks when our nation gained its independence, it’s also the time of year we like to pause and reflect on what freedom means to our company.

Our independence as a local Oklahoma insurance agency is something we’re proud of and go to great measures to uphold. The fact that we’ve remained independent since 1980 is a testament to how we do business, which is by always putting our clients first. Our superior customer service is what sets us apart and is best achieved by remaining independent, which gives us the ability to extend various benefits along to our clients.

    Options

Being an independent agency means we have the freedom to represent more than one company. Whereas a lot of agencies are captive, or represent only one company, we are partnered with multiple insurance companies, which enables us to present our clients with options. And since variety is the spice of life, we believe this is a major factor in our success. Regardless of what policy you’re in the market for, you need options to choose from. We recommend getting quotes from at least three different companies to ensure you're getting the best policy available.

    Time Savings

Another benefit of being an independent agency is the amount of time we save our clients.Sure, you can contact three companies on your own, but why waste so much of your time? With one phone call, we can get you comparable quotes from multiple companies, thus ensuring you’re getting the most competitive rates out there. And since time is money, you'll enjoy double savings when you choose Wiedemann.

    Personal Service

We believe personal service goes a long way in making a company truly successful. And being independent allows us to go the extra mile for our clients, undoubtedly producing secure connections, expanding our network and solidifying our business reputation. This is especially important in today’s digital world where consumers are used to instant gratification and answers at the click of a mouse. Most are tempted to go online looking for fast coverage, but it often ends up costing them more in the long run. Dealing with e-commerce insurance is risky behavior, not only when considering the proper coverage amounts for your specific needs, but also in the fine print, which can cause you unforeseen issues down the road. What’s worse, when you have a question or claim and call the toll-free number, the only help they offer is automated. Where’s the customer service? Don’t trust your protection to an impersonal computer program that doesn’t have the ability to consider your needs and how they can be best met, stop by our office to speak to someone in person or give us a call to schedule a consultation.

    Resources

We’re proud to belong to many groups that help foster our business relationships, increase our knowledge and experience, and also help build positive, helpful relationships with our clients. This time of year, we like to focus on the OAA (Oklahoma Agents Alliance), whose mission it is to offer local, independent agents the ability to remain independent while establishing their agency and expanding their professional reach. Some of the numerous benefits we (and, in turn, you) reap through our membership include:

    • Training and education opportunities
    • SIAA national incentive
    • Access to expert advice and resources
    • Business insurance opportunities
    • Excess and surplus lines options
    • Increased value, income and commissions
    • The Agency Foundation helps build a solid, reputable agency

Earlier this month, we attended the OAA’s 15th annual Success Celebration; a nod to the past year’s industry activity, which awards the members based on things like performance and profitability. Over 200 people in attendance welcomed new members, inducted existing members into the Hall of Fame and accepted profit sharing awards totaling nearly five million dollars.

We’re beyond excited to announce that out of 120+ agencies, Wiedemann received awards for Top Performing Agency and Profitability, an acknowledgement so huge to us, we just had to share the good news with you.

This is monumental for us, but it’s even bigger for our clients. The better we produce for the industry, the better we are taking care of our clients, which is really what’s at the heart of our company’s mission: Individuals over things. Relationships over money.

  • 5 Ways to be the Most Safety-Savvy Dad Alive

When it comes to being a dad, there's no doubt one of your main concerns is the safety of your family. You put up fencing in the yard, install a security alarm and make the switch from sports car to family-friendly SUV, all in an effort to protect them. It makes you wonder how a lot of us survived growing up in times before some of these modern-day safety measures existed. How did Dad keep us safe back then

Looking back, there were probably a ton of things your dad did with your safety in mind, including giving you oodles of life advice. Does the phrase, “You’ll understand someday when you have kids,” ring a bell? It's funny that no matter how much the times may change, certain things will always be true. You can count on most of the advice your father gave you to remain relevant over the years. Commonplace “Daddisms” apply to all sorts of real-life situations, even insurance. And there's a reason we consider them cliche; they work. Maybe Dad knew what he was talking about after all.

Here’s how modern-day dads can apply old-school dad advice to become their family’s safety superhero:

    Stop and Smell the Roses

You've surely heard someone say this before and more than likely it was your father. Maybe he was telling you to slow down while you were riding your bike as a child, or when you turned 16 and got behind the wheel for the first time. Chances are, he said it as he watched you rushing your school years away or when you were working overtime, clamoring up the career ladder. So many times our elders tell us to stop and smell the roses; you never know what you'll miss while you're rushing through life. And, looking back, boy were they right.

Slowing down applies to numerous situations in life, but in the insurance world, it's the best way to stay on top of your family's safety. There are various policies every family needs to shelter them from loss; take your time choosing the right ones.Don’t put their safety in the hands of a website promising you instant peace of mind, seek an experienced agency that will spend time getting to know your needs and go the extra mile to make sure everything is covered.

    Change the Oil

Literally, this is referring to regular vehicle maintenance, which is great advice for extending the life of your car. But, more figuratively, it means to maintain your life. To really take care of your family, there are certain things that must be maintained on a regular basis:

For starters, yourself- Establishing an exercise routine and getting an annual checkup are great ways to maintain your health and doing so sets a positive example for other family members.

Your home and property- Clean the gutters, wash the windows, fix the leaky roof, keep the weeds clear; you get the point. Staying on top of issues around the house is crucial to your family's safety and to extending the life of one of your greatest investments--your home base.

Your insurance policies- Performing annual reviews of your policies is always a great idea. Read the fine print, double-check coverage amounts, compare premiums and make sure to add protection for any new additions to the family.

If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It

This one goes back to simpler times when keeping up with the Jones’ wasn’t a concern, people worked hard for everything they had and getting the latest gadget released by Apple wasn’t even a part of their wildest dreams. Anyone remember those days?

More than likely, everyone's dad has something they've held on to far longer than deemed acceptable by society, and why? Because it still works. It's as simple as that. It never occurred to him to replace the console tv until the 1990’s because it wasn't necessary; if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Scott Wiedemann and His FatherLiving simply or “within your means” is some of the best advice Dad ever gave. It protects your current and future finances and sets a great example for your kids. Contact us to learn about insurance policies custom-tailored to your needs and financial situation.

If It Is Broken, Fix It

Likewise, if something isn't working, make it right again. So many of us have fallen into the habit of instant-gratification; if something stops working, we replace it. Whatever happened to good, old-fashioned elbow grease?

Don't let the dust settle on things in your life that can be fixed; make the classic car run again, do home renovations instead of moving to a new home and always adjust your insurance policies if they aren't working right for your family.

  • How to Lessen Your Liability This Summer

Increasing temperatures and longer, sunnier days means summer is on the horizon. Mother Nature is tempting people to spend those extra hours outdoors camping, boating, road-tripping and doing countless other warm-weather activities. Some people are looking forward to a vacation away, while others are planning family reunions and barbecues close to home. No matter what your summer plans are, it's important to keep in mind that these activities carry a certain amount of liability for you. Even Mother Nature can get ugly from time to time; don’t let the fun of summer keep you from protecting yourself from potential risks.

Whether you're heading across the country for the trip of a lifetime or planning a fiesta-filled staycation, there are a few things you should do first:

    Check Your Policies

    • Stormy summer weather has the tendency to wreak havoc on your property. Downed trees and roof damage are just a couple of ways it can cause devastation, sending you straight for an insurance claim. And if you don't have the proper coverage, you risk spending a lot of money out-of-pocket for repairs. Regardless of the season, it's crucial to always make sure your home, its contents and your entire property are fully covered and at their current values.
    • Let's face it, accidents happen. Even when we’ve played by all the rules, occasional mishaps will pop up and sometimes it will result in an injury. That’s why you want to make sure you're properly covered. Something as simple as having a play date in your backyard can carry the risk of a broken leg, an allergic reaction to a bee sting or any number of unforeseen events. Contact your agent to make sure your homeowners policy covers any accidents that could occur on your property.
    • Most homeowners policies follow you while you're on a trip, but it's a good idea to clarify before you go on vacation. If they don't cover rentals, we recommend getting renters insurance for condo or cabin stays. You’ll also want to make sure your home and its contents will be covered while you're away.
    • Not all auto policies carry over to cover rentals, which means you may end up being fully liable for any damages incurred while a rented vehicle is in your possession. Whether you’re renting a car or an RV, always check with your agent first, then you may want to consider the policy offered by the rental company.

    Play It Safe

One of the best ways to lessen your liability is to stay ahead of the game. A little prep work can go a long way in ensuring your summer goes smoothly.

    • If you have a pool, it's highly important to keep it maintained on a regular basis. Before each use, check for debris or other objects that could be harmful to swimmers. Always keep it clean and covered when not in use. Some policies require fencing around pools as a safety precaution, so check with your agent to make sure you’re meeting the guidelines.
    • Do frequent walkthroughs of the yard to check for hazards like holes or sharp objects that could cause harm to someone.
    • Make sure toys and playground equipment are clean and functioning properly, any fencing is in tact and gates close and lock as they should.
    • If using a grill, ensure it's a safe distance from house or other structures to avoid a potential fire hazard.
    • Scan your property for any harmful nature--beehives, wasps nests, poison ivy or anything else that could cause issues.
    • Stay on top of any activities going on in and around your home; monitor playing children or sporting teenagers and always be aware of your surroundings when outside.
